Japan Earthquake: What We Know

In Japan:

  • A 8.9 Magnitude earthquake strikes of the coast of Honshu, Japan
  • Immedietly an huge tsunami, reported to be 30 ft high in some areas, strikes the coast of Japan and sweeps almost 3 miles inland.
  • Power is out, cell phone coverage is gone, and close to 300 lives are lost.
  • The sun is just rising in Japan, so we will now see the real scope of damage on land.
  • 2 nuclear power plants are in a state of of emergency.
  • This earthquake is so powerful that parts of Japan will be submerged and will be lost, causing changes to the map of Japan
  • Multiple trains are reported missing. It is likely that that they were swept away by tsunami waves.
  • Aftershocks continue to rock nation, the strongest recorded to this point being a 7.7 magnitude.
  • Fires continue to burn across the ravaged nation as well.
In Hawaii:
  • Weaker tsunami struck Hawaii around 8a est and caused some damage on Costline.
On West Coast of US:
  • Tsunami wave reached west coast approx. 6 hours after earthquake. Main damage done to northern California and Southern Oregon coast line.
  • Multiple reports of people being swept out to sea by waves, most were saved.
  • Reports of damage have been reported all up and down the entire west coast of North and South America.
