MONKEY WRENCH THROWN INTO OUR WINTER

Mon, Jan 16th | Winter Analysis | (Mr G)

Looks like that monkey wrench that I was afraid of got thrown into the whole switch to the cold pattern. Many winter forecasters (including Josh and I) have to now revise our winter forecasts. Early last week and the week before as we saw the conditions in the atmosphere trending towards a colder/snowier pattern, I mentioned that something else could happen, we could see a halt to that transition and an abrupt reversal back to the mild pattern we have been experiencing (which at the time, I saw as 80% chance or nothappening)-well... it did happen-so look for the rest of January to be very mild-don't be surprised we see another 60 degree day or so next week-which is actually kinda nice for doing things outside and it saves on the heating bills. However, for you are snow and cold weather fans...its a big disappointment...if you want any cold and snow...I guess you'll have to go to the Pacific Northwest...places like Seattle or Portland, Oregon who will get the cold and wintery weather. The rest of week looks like to be seasonably chilly (except Wed where we will see rain and mild in the 50s) w/ highs in the 40s with no chance of snow except maybe in far Western Maryland where it will be in the 30s for highs. Next weekend looks to turn milder with highs in the 50s. There is always February and even March where we have historically had our biggest snowstorms, but as for the arctic cold, once we pass the 1st or 2nd week of February...the higher angle of the sun and the longer days make for shorter durations of arctic cold. At this point, I can't say yet we'll see that major cold and snow happen unless this stubborn pattern breaks down.
