Winter Analysis from Long Range and Winter Forecaster Mark Gonzalez:
As Josh mentioned this morning we are in for a few mild days, but dont let this temporary mild streak fool you, winter will probably be back soon with a vengeance. By the end of next week into the 3rd week of January, we will begin to see the bottom fall out as far as temperatures are concerned. Check out the attached photo from the European forecast model for MLK Day Jan 16th-this model tends to be the more conservative and reliable option when it comes to forecasting winter weather compared the American model the GFS. Notice the darker blues and purple colors over Maryland-that is arctic air. IF this model hold true, we will definitely be looking at the arrival of arctic air that will be more sustained lasting for several days after each shot approaches. Still too far out to see if snowstorm will develop, but the trend will soon be in place. Will it last into February, typically our stormiest winter month? Too soon to tell, but for you winter fans, there is hope that we can salvage some cold and snow out of what has been thus far a pretty mild winter.
